Do Tourniquets Hurt?
Tourniquets can feel tight and uncomfortable because they apply pressure around a limb. Why Does a Tourniquet Feel Uncomfortable?
A tourniquet compresses blood vessels and surrounding soft tissue. During routine blood collection, the goal is mainly to slow venous return so a vein becomes easier to see and access.

What Can Increase Discomfort During Blood Collection?

Skin or hair is trapped beneath it.

It remains applied longer than necessary.
The band is very narrow.
The patient has sensitive or damaged skin.
The same application point is used repeatedly.
The material has a rough or sticky surface.
A flat, flexible band distributes pressure more evenly than a narrow cord or improvised material.
Healthcare staff should also check whether the patient has wounds, burns, swelling, surgical access, paralysis, or another condition that affects the choice of limb.
How Can Routine Tourniquet Comfort Be Improved?
The band should be positioned above the intended venipuncture site without covering damaged skin.
Apply enough tension to make the vein easier to locate without unnecessarily compressing the limb. Keep the material flat and avoid catching skin in buckles or overlapping sections.
The tourniquet should be released as soon as the procedure permits. Leaving it on too long can increase discomfort and may influence some blood-test results.
