Where to place a tourniquet depends on its intended use. For life-threatening limb bleeding, an emergency tourniquet is generally placed 2–3 inches above the wound and never over a joint.

For life-threatening bleeding from an arm, an emergency tourniquet should generally be placed 2–3 inches, or approximately 5–7.5 cm, above the wound and between the wound and the heart. It must not be positioned directly over the injury, elbow, or another joint.

How a tourniquet is used depends on whether it is intended for routine blood collection or emergency bleeding control.

Tourniquets can feel tight and uncomfortable because they apply pressure around a limb.

The phrase “make a tourniquet” can refer to two different situations. One is creating an improvised device during a life-threatening bleeding emergency. The other is manufacturing a medical tourniquet for venipuncture, infusion, or hospital supply.

A tourniquet is commonly used during venipuncture to temporarily slow venous blood flow and make the veins easier to locate. However, leaving it on for too long may affect the patient’s comfort and alter certain laboratory results.

For hospitals, clinics, laboratories, blood collection centers, and medical distributors, this is not just a training detail. Tourniquet timing affects workflow, test reliability, patient experience, and the consistency of daily phlebotomy practice. When staff are busy or equipment is not easy to access, small delays can turn into repeated process problems.

A tourniquet is usually applied above the intended venipuncture site, most often on the upper arm when blood is drawn from the antecubital area. That is the simple answer. In routine medical use, the goal is to make the vein easier to locate by slowing venous return without stopping arterial blood flow.
